What new Special Education Teachers Need to Know

Being a special education teacher is a very admirable occupation, but it is also a very hard one. You have an extraordinary amount of responsibility and at times, little assistance. Therefore, to be successful in special education you have to be prepared. And each year in special education is different, so new teachers in the field need to know the best ways to prepare. Here are a few areas new special education teachers can get started.

Classroom Arrangement

Before the school year begins, a special education teacher needs to formulate an arrangement of the classroom. Such an arrangement is predicated on the needs of the students — both physically and learning-wise. Space should be allocated for those that need it, such as students in wheelchairs, and desks should be able to accommodate any special learning technology.

Class Rules

Every class has a set of rules, and special education classes are no exception. However, a new teacher needs to consider what rules will work best in helping the students without hindering their development. A new special education teacher should also be flexible with the rules based on student reactions.

Student Disabilities

Special education teachers need to know as much about their students as possible, especially in regards to their disabilities. With this information a teacher is able to know what to expect and how best to teach the class curriculum.

How to use Assistive Devices

Some special education students will require the use of assistive technology. It is important the teacher be trained in their use to better serve the student.
